Of unique interest is our growing collection of Wilkinsburg history items. The collection is currently being organized and curated, and will contain valuable and fascinating information for those who wish to learn more about Wilkinsburg.
Several desktop computers are available for patrons with a valid, fine-free library card to use in the library. The computers are connected and have easy access to several online databases for reference, research, and learning. A wi-fi network is available in the library for patrons who want to bring the laptop computer. Classes for learning the basics of using the computer to access the internet and work with e-mail are periodically offered to patrons.
Today's children will be tomorrow's leaders and the Wilkinsburg Public Library and Eastridge branch want to play an important role in their development. The Children's Library occupies much of the second level of the Wilkinsburg Public Library and contains a large collection of titles for all ages of childhood. Programs are available for children as young as 6 months of age. Story hours and holiday programs are quite popular among children 3 to 6 years of age. Wii gaming and computer access interest kids of all ages.
Activities / Events
Both the Wilkinsburg Public Library and Eastridge branch offer a variety of activities for patrons to learn new things and meet others. Popular activities include Learning to Crochet and Chess. Suggestions for activities are always welcome from our patrons.
The Wilkinsburg Public Library developed an Outreach Program during the 1970's to enhance the library's relationship with homebound patrons so that they may continue to enjoy the library in spite of their inability to travel to the library. The program started with a retired police car for transporting books and magazines, and has grown since that time. Homebound patrons are able to order books, magazines, and movies by way of online access at home to the library's catalog.
The Outreach Program has been and continues to be a tremendous success. Many of the patrons are elderly, unable to travel, and receive few visitors. Bringing the library to them brings rewards greater than simply delivering books, magazines, and movies because the visits often mean so much to the patrons.
